How to Identify & Prevent American, German & Oriental Cockroaches from Entering Your Home in The Villages, FL

One of the worst pests to come across in your home is a cockroach. They are nasty little critters that often go un-noticed for a long time because of their ability to stay hidden during the day. Most people come across one of these gross pests when they sneak back to the kitchen at night for a quick snack, flick on the light switch and are horrified to see roaches scurrying away! Cockroaches stay hidden during the day when the house is bright, active and noisy. At night when it gets dark and quiet, they start to come out and scrounge around for food and water. This is an easy meal for a roach family since they are so small they don’t need much to sustain their life. It can be some small crumbs left on the counter or floors left without being swept. Roaches will feed on just about any food source they can find. The problem with cockroaches is that they carry bacteria and disease that can be transmitted to people quiet easily! The only thing that has to happen is the roach crawls over a surface and then you go along after and touch it which is very easy to do.

Pest 911 Lists Cockroaches You May Find in Your Home & Some Tips on Preventing Them from Coming Back!

American Cockroach: Although the name is American, these roaches are actually not the most common cockroach that is found in homes around the United States. However, American cockroaches are commonly found here; most often around homes, offices and trash bins. They are not as common but are the largest species you will most likely see. The adult American cockroach reaches about two inches in length and it is usually a reddish brown color with a distinct yellow band behind the back of the head. The adults also develop wings and they can fly if they are threatened and afraid.
German Cockroach: This is a much more common cockroach to find around your home. German cockroaches are lighter in color and tend to be a tan or other shade of light brown. They are much smaller, usually reaching around a half an inch in length when they are fully grown. They also can be identified by the two black lines that run down the back of them. German cockroaches also have a full set of wings but they usually will not try and fly because they prefer to run away from danger.
Oriental Cockroach: This is a cockroach that is slightly larger than the German cockroach since they reach about an inch when they are fully grown. Oriental cockroaches are more distinguishable by their dark black, shiny coloring. The males have a half-length set of wings but also do not fly. They are found more commonly by trash cans but will come inside when they are in search of food.
