Insects Are Found on Every Continent: Insects are interesting in the fact that they can exist in almost any kind of atmosphere and weather. There are some that are good in the cold while others do great in the hot dry temperatures. With all that said there is one continent that does have pests even though they are extremely limited. Antarctica has such a frigid atmosphere that it is difficult for anything to really exist. There is one insect that has made their life work there and that is a tiny wingless midge. They are a dark purple or black to soak up the sun rays when they can, and they are able to withstand the freezing weather. All other continents have a plethora or pests found by the millions. 47 species of midges are found in Florida!
Insects Don’t Live In The Ocean: Insects are land loving critters. They are found all over the world where there is land to be had. One area that they have not been able to take a hold on is in the oceans. There is some speculation that insects need more plants to live in and the ocean is not able to give them. Another theory is that they are closely related to crustaceans and they have adapted better to the living conditions so the land loving insects stay away.
Insects Have Great Eyesight: When you see an insect, they are seeing you in a much more complex way. Insects have compound eyes that have several small units on it. The units are called an ommatidia that is part of one eye. The eye uses all these separate sections that work together to show off their eyesight. One of the most complex visions of all the insects is the dragonfly. They have so many units they are seeing in pixels that can show up the best televisions.
Insects Have Mad Hops: If you look at how high a person can jump, you may think it is pretty high. Scientists tested some of the best jumpers from the NBA and NFL and found that they were able to jump about 46 inches which is pretty impressive. But that is nothing compared to what an insect is able to do. Many insects are able to jump much higher than their own body but one out jumps them all. There is a pest called meadow froghopper that is able to jump 100 times its own height.
