Asian subterranean termites is one species of termite that can be found all over the world. They too make a carton like nest underground. The Asian subterranean termite prefers tropical climates and can be largely found through Southern Florida. Asian subterranean termites will feed on wooden structures and decaying or dying trees.
Eastern Subterranean Termites
Eastern subterranean termites are found all over the United States. They thrive by digging deep underground and feed on wood close to the surface. They are also known to build their nest inside timber and dying tree. They are one of the few subterranean species to live on the surface and underground. They vastly inhabit the east coast and are commonly found in Florida homes.
West Indian Drywood Termites
Where most termites invade from underground and internally infest and eat on wood, West Indian Drywood termites will feed on wood from the outside. They are often responsible for damage furniture and cabinets. They love tropical climates and are active throughout the year.
Florida Dampwood Termites
Another tropical loving species is the Florida Dampwood termite and are mainly found along the Florida Keys. Florida Dampwood termites stick close to a plentiful water source and can be seen on the surface after rain or even after a lawn was just watered. Florida Dampwood termite will feed on any wood source including structural wood.
Conehead Termites
New to Florida are Conehead termites which have been found feasting away in Broward County, Florida. Conehead termites are spreading throughout Florida. They make their nest above ground and don’t rely on burrowing underground. Instead they make a maze of mud tunnels to offer protection. They are named after their cone like heads, making them easily identified. Conehead termites will feed on any type of wood structure as well as decaying wood. They are also found in rural and urban environments.
