American Cockroach
Florida is inhabited by the American, German, Oriental and Smoky Brown roaches. The American cockroach is big compared to most U.S. bugs. Growing to over to over 1 ½ inches these guys are everywhere. Smoky Brown Cockroach
The Smoky Browns are another large cockroach species. They fly as well, but are just slightly smaller than the American roach. These insects munch on plant material, but can consume organic debris once they invade your domicile. Smoky brown roaches enjoy eating pet food, indoor plants and other organics. Like the American cockroach they prefer moisture prone areas, and dry up quickly if denied a source of water. They don’t like vents or other sources of moving air.
Oriental Cockroach
About 1.25 inches long, Oriental cockroaches are found mostly outdoors, but during times of drought they may venture inside homes looking for water. Once indoors, you will mostly likely find them in areas with high moisture such as sewers and drains. Oriental roaches prefer to feed on all sorts of decaying matter which makes them especially partial to garbage cans. They are rarely found on walls or in cabinets and furniture.
German Cockroach
The German roach is the most common roach found in apartments, restaurants and hotels. Like the others, warmth, food and moisture define luxury living for these roaches. They prefer the dark, and with a large infestation they leave their feces about which resembles black pepper.
Cockroach Bacteria, Diseases & Health Problems
Across the U.S. there are 70 identified roach species with nearly 4,000 worldwide. The cockroach species that want to move in with us are referred to as ‘domiciliary’ species. The scariest revelation is that the bacteria cockroaches carry have shown complete resistance to penicillin. Some that carry an antibiotic resistant bacterium that causes pneumonia has been found in hospitals. Studies have shown that bacteria and viruses that cause leprosy have been connected to the roach. These bacteria are dangerous. The very young and elderly are very susceptible to these disease organisms. The roaches, their disagreeable appearance aside, are killers, in that they represent a mechanical vector for many ailments.
